Chinese-owned social media platform TikTok has unveiled several new features for European users aimed at improving compliance with upcoming European Union regulations.Under the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA), TikTok owner ByteDance, a unit of Alphabet's Google, requires other major online platforms to monitor illegal content on their platforms, ban certain ads and share information with authorities. But when TikTok agreed to a voluntary stress test last month, EU industry chief Thierry Breton said more work was needed for the company to fully comply.
"TikTok devotes significant resources to compliance," Breton told CNN. "Now is the time to step up to be fully compliant.
The company on Friday unveiled new steps to comply with the DSA: making it easier for European users to report illegal content, turning off personalized video recommendations and removing ads aimed at users aged 13-17. "We continue to not only meet our regulatory obligations, but also strive to set new standards with innovative solutions," the company said.
