The Mustang GTD, which just debuted at Monterey Auto Week, is basically the company's Mustang GT3 race car for road use, but it's even tougher than a race car if you believe it. According to Ford, the GTD is powered by the most powerful V8 ever, a version of the GT500 "Predator" 5.2-liter supercharged V8 that produces around 800 horsepower.
To maintain the desired 50/50 weight distribution, Ford uses a rear-drive transmission, the first in a road-going Mustang to feature an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.
"We didn't want Aston Martin, Mercedes and Porsche to have fun with their cars," Ford CEO Jim Farley told Yahoo Finance about the Monterey Auto Week charlatan. "And we think the time is right to build the Mustang into a more expensive $300,000 model. The GTD is also the first in a road-going Mustang to use a rear bin for an all-new rear suspension and spring setup.
As seen on racing cars and ultra-exotic road cars, the GTD received an "integrated pushrod and rocker architecture", where the car's active dampers and coil springs are arranged in a horizontal cross-sectional pattern. It's a very trick, race car setup, and it certainly doesn't come cheap.
This is definitely no ordinary Mustang.
While Ford wants to show the world what the company can do on the racetrack, the question is what kind of buyers are willing to pay $300,000 for a similar-looking car based somewhat on the $30,000 Mustang pony car.
That may be a matter for another day, as the GTD, so far believed to be a 2025 model year car, is being built in such small numbers that it will likely be in high demand among car enthusiasts.
